About Texas Contractor Check

A free, independent tool that helps Texas homeowners vet contractors before hiring. No login, no paywall, no affiliate links, no “premium tier.”

Why this exists

Texas is one of a handful of states that does not license general contractors. Anyone can print a business card, buy a truck, and hold themselves out as a home builder or remodeler. The state does license many specific trades through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation — electricians, air conditioning contractors, plumbers, and roofers among them — but there is no single searchable place where a homeowner can pull together a contractor's license status, business registration, complaint history, and local permitting footprint.

So homeowners either trust a referral and hope for the best, or they spend an afternoon clicking through five different government websites trying to piece it together. The worst outcomes — abandoned projects, liens on the home, uninsured injuries on the job site, unfinished work after a six-figure draw — are entirely preventable with thirty seconds of public-records research. This site is that thirty seconds.

What this is not

  • Not affiliated with any government agency, the Better Business Bureau, or any contractor organization.
  • Not a recommendation service. We do not rank contractors against each other or accept payment for placement.
  • Not legal advice. The risk score is a summary of public data and is not a substitute for talking to a lawyer if you're entering a significant construction contract.
  • Not a guarantee of quality. A contractor with an A grade here can still do bad work on your project, and a contractor with limited data can still be excellent. Always verify insurance, get multiple bids, check references, and put agreements in writing.

Data freshness

Every search hits the underlying data sources in real time. There is no database of contractors on our end. If TDLR updated a license status this morning, that's the status you'll see. If BBB posted a new complaint yesterday, it's reflected in the rating.
